Genealogy of the Böttcher family: Overview

Content

Preface

Would anybody doing research on the Böttcher family please contact me in order to exchange data. I aim to compile the family tree as completely as possible.

In particular I am doing research in the members from Kulm and Leipzig but I am thankful also for every reference you find anywhere in Bessarabia.

Database

The persons which I have added to my database are listed in the family tree of the Böettcher family. The database contains mainly members from Kulm and Leipzig. If you are interested in receiving further data please contact me. I will be glad to help you as much as possible.

In the database I have collected information from the following sources; the numbers are the numbers of the microfilms that are archived at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where they can also be borrowed.

Emigration to Bessarabia

In a list written on February 3rd 1838 the sexton D. Traichel notes that it was not possible to specify the dates of birth because the church records from before 1848 were destroyed. The age specified was the age at the date of Kulm's foundation on September 1st 1815. I have added the year of birth which result in brackets. In this list we find the colonist Christoph Böttiger, 50 [1765], from Grünberg / Poland (corrected: Grömberg), married to Justine, 40 [1775], and their children Gottfried, 18 [1797], Martin, 14 [1801], Christoph, 9 [1806], Johann, 6 [1809], Justine, 2 [1813].

On the internet I found a note that Martin Böttcher born about 1797 in Grünbach, Poland, married to Beata Ruge is the son of Christoph Böttcher (born 1769, died April 17th 1820 in Leipzig, Bessarabia).

According to this note the father of Christoph is Johann Böttcher born about 1750 in Friedland, Mecklenburg. Unfortunately the note did not mention the sources and probably this is only an assumed relationship. Who can give further explanation?

According to an old tradition in the family the Böttchers of Kulm came from a village called Strassburg. I couldn't find any information anywhere to verify this. Maybe the Roloffs are from Strassburg and there was a mix-up? Who can help?

Dead Ends

Relationship

Apart from in the villages of Kulm and Leipzig there are other branches of the Böttcher family, e.g. in Paris or Tarutino or in the Beresan area in Waterloo and Worms. It was not possible to connect these branches using church records.

Andrew Barett-Bettcher, a descendant of Michael Böttcher from Paris, suggests we take a genetical approach instead. Those who want to participate please contact me and I will bring you together. Anyone who has questions about the Paris branch should also contact Andrew, because he is doing research on it.

Basis for the genetical test are 43 markers. Because the Y-chromosome does not change for several generations unless there is an accidential mutation this is a very good test to detect relationship. The results which are available so far show that in all likelihood the families from Waterloo and Worms are not related to those from Paris. 19 of 43 markers are different. Only 1-2 differences per 25 markers can be explained by a mutation.

There is a separate page available dealing with the origin of the Böttcher family.
